The Worlds Smartest Surf Watch

INTRODUCING THE ULTRATIDE BY NIXON, THE WORLD’S SMARTEST SURF WATCH

Watch HERE

Forever changing the landscape of how surf report information is delivered, and challenging the status quo of what you’ve come to expect from a tide watch, Nixon introduces The Ultratide powered by Surfline.

Two years in the making and delivering a revolution in surf watch technology, Nixon’s Ultratide is the product of extensive research, team development and represents a state-of-the-art addition to Nixon’s industry-leading Supertide and Lodown franchises. An exclusive partnership with Surfline taps the power of their leading global surf conditions network and delivers real-time data via wireless Bluetooth® technology to the Ultratide: tide, time, wave height, swell direction, wind direction and speed, water and air temperatures.

For decades tide watches could only use predicted information, now we have the ability to see 10X more detail than any other watch.

For over 30 years, Surfline has been the world’s leading and most reliable source in surf forecasting. Through this exclusive partnership, Nixon brings a new and functional way of accessing Surfline’s real-time data and a 48-hour forecast. Forget what you think you know about tide watches, The Ultratide is like nothing you’ve seen before: it’s the smartest and strongest surf watch on the market.

“We are excited to share the news of The Ultratide,” said Nixon Co-Founder Chad DiNenna. “For decades tide watches could only use predicted information, now we have the ability to see 10X more detail than any other watch. Surfers globally have been referencing Surfline’s data for 30 years via phone, fax, computer and mobile devices, we at Nixon are proud to be the partner to bring it to your wrist.”

Using advanced technology to take surf watches to an entirely new level, Nixon and Surfline’s goal in creating the Ultratide was not to change the way people surf, but rather give surfers more information and to deliver it in real time so you’ll never not know.

The Ultratide will make sure you never miss an epic session again.

The Ultratide - unlike virtually every smart watch out there today - has no pesky cords required to sync or charge. Syncing with your smartphone via Bluetooth delivers the most accurate and up-to-date surf conditions directly to your wrist. This is not predicted information… this is real time with 10 live data points including creating custom surf alerts for the spots you want and the conditions you like. Browse the entire Surfline network of spots - over 2,700 and growing - and select your favorites. Set up custom alerts for each spot, and the Ultratide will make sure you never miss an epic session again.

“Surfline’s promise is to help surfers across the world score better surf,” stated Ross Garrett, Surfline GM. “Working with Nixon, a brand that has been committed to the needs of surfers in their products for over 16 years, expands the places and ways we can deliver on our promise.”

I use the Photochromic Red Sensor lens most of the time it adapts easily to early cloud cover to mid day sun and late afternoon shadows. I also use the black out lens on extremely sunny days and spring skiing and the Blue Sensor Mirror lens on powder and snow days. The three lens travel easily in the google bag and switch out in seconds with the quick release system. It Literally takes less than 2 minutes to switch out lens. The two lenses that came in the box are perfect for any condition that I have run into, and it is nice to be able to switch them out in seconds. If you are on the edge of buying two lower priced goggles (one for white-out and the other for sunny days) or this with types both included... GO FOR THIS PAIR! You will not be disappointed by any means. They look great, I have had great comments from other friends (that will also be picking up pairs themselves), and they give a large range of vision compared to other goggle brands that I have used.

Heres some Highlights From http://www.worldsurfleague.com Final Day Recap

During the Final of the J-Bay Open Mick Fanning (AUS) was attacked by a shark. The World Surf League (WSL) Water Safety team responded quickly, immediately removing Fanning and fellow finalist Julian Wilsonfrom the water. Miraculously, neither surfer was harmed in the attack.

After discussion with WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow, Wilson and Fanning decided to each take equal second in rankings points and split the prize purse awarded to the winner. Adriano de Souza (BRA), current World No. 1, will retain the yellow jersey and the top spot on the Jeep Leaderboard going into the next CT event, the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

The stage was set for a heavy day of competition at J-Bay, with solid conditions. Wilson's Quarterfinal heat against World No. 1 Adriano de Souza (BRA) could make or break his run at the No. 1 spot: A loss for the Brazilian would leave the door open for Wilson to take the yellow jersey.

De Souza put two midrange scores on the board right away. But Wilson fired back, finding a 6.93 to start and then earning an excellent-range score (of 8.00 or better) under the Brazilian's priority to take the lead. Next, in Wilson's Semifinal heat against Adrian Buchan (AUS), he remained selective and opened with an 8.73. An excellent-range backup saw him through to the Final -- a little payback after Buchan defeated him in Round 4.

The day's other heats included matchups among Fanning, Kelly Slater(USA) and Gabriel Medina (BRA). The three had previously faced off in a so-called superheat", and were now slated foe man-on-man matchups.

Burton Antler Flying V 2016 Review

The Burton Antler Flying V is a high performing, lightweight board that is made for people who don’t need a board as aggressive as the Custom X. Made to get a good ride, without being super unforgivable and aggressive.

Features of the Burton Antler Flying V

Flying V bend

Directional shape

Twin Flex

Dragonfly Core

Multizone EGD

Sintered WFO base

60° Carbon Highlights Hi-Voltage

Squeezebox High

The Channel

Scoop

Pro-Tip

Dual Guard Rails

Infinite Ride

Burton Board Tech Video - --------- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_FS3-8s7jU -----------

Camber profile

The Flying V camber profile (or bend)

Basically the Flying V combines the reverse camber and regular camber. Between your feet there is a rocker section, then under your feet there is the regular camber, then out towards the tip and the tail there are rocker sections.

It is made so that you can get a loose and more forgiving ride, but the camber sections under your feet can be used to help give you grip and stability that you normally wouldn’t have on a reverse camber board.

The Antler is a Directional board, so it has a slightly longer nose than the tail. The bigger nose means that you will get a bit of extra float in deep snow, and more pop in the tail. Don’t worry for freestyle riding, you can ride a directional board switch with no problem.

It has a Twin Flex, that just means the the flex of the board (from tip to tail) is symmetrical, so if you are riding it switch, the flex is going to be exactly the same.

The Antler has the Dragonfly Core, which is reserved for the higher end Burton boards. It is made up of more than 500 different laminations, so you end up with a core that is lighter than most, strong and poppy.

The Burton Antler Flying V 2016 is an ultralight, high performing hybrid camber snowboard. It is made for riders who want a high performance board, without it being super aggressive and unforgiving. Think of it as a few steps less aggressive than the Custom X, but is still light, fast and jumps just as well. On top of that, it has the Squeezebox High which explained by the Burton website:

By integrating carbon fleece into the classic Squeezebox profile, we’ve loaded up our highest performance core profiling with more pop. Layered just outside your feet, the carbon enables almost instant response in the tip and tail.

The Sintered WFO base is hard and fast. It is durable, so it can take a beating, and is good at soaking up wax. As well as taking in a lot of wax and keeping you going fast, the base material is infused with high and low temperature waxes at the factory.

The angle of the fiberglass is at 60°, which give the board a more playful feel, which is a lot less aggressive than the 45° that is used on the Custom X.

It has The Channel, so the easiest option for bindings are going to be Burton EST, but you can pretty much put on any bindings on a Channel board now.

The Infinite Ride means that the board is broken in at the factory, so that the board is going to have the same ride that it does on the first day of riding to the last.

Should I buy the Burton Antler?

The Burton Antler is going to be a good board for someone who wants a light, fun board that they can ride anywhere. It isn’t super aggressive, but is still going to give you a lot of performance.

Luan Oliveira took home his first SLS Nike SB World Tour win, knocking Nyjah Huston out of the lead on the final trick, a switch frontside bigspin heelflip. Congratulations Luan!

Final Results:
1. Luan Oliveira – 34.2
2. Nyjah Huston – 34.0
3. Chaz Ortiz – 33.1
4.

Brazil’s Luan Oliveira is a proven champion who has been steadily figuring out how to win Street League, and since 2012 he has moved up in the overall rankings two spots each year. From 6th to 4th in 2013, up to 2nd last year.

What this means is he is closer to his first Street League win than you might think. In 2013, he placed 3rd in the four final stops including the championship, behind only Nyjah Huston and Chris Cole.

In 2014, he had an average trick score of 8.0 and his highest scored trick was a 9.5. He won the 2015 Tampa Pro contest beating out Nyjah Huston and appears ready to unleash on the 2015 Nike SB World Tour.

Jye Kearney Wins 10th Annual Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam

Jye Kearney has officially become the most successful rider in Cattleman’s history, snatching an unprecedented fourth title and a $4000 pay cheque at the 10th annual Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam.

With the snow falling on Mt Buller’s famous village square, Jye edged passed 15 of the country’s best snowboarders, finishing ahead of second placed Geremy Guido and third place Sam Neuman.

It’s hard to believe that at only 22, Jye is now a veteran at Cattleman’s and his experience in the event certainly showed as he methodically worked through the jam, landing virtually every combination of 270s on and off the rail, impressive gaps from the upper takeoff and hits from both the left and right top close-out rails. Jye’s consistency, creativity and famously casual style has solidified his position as one of Australia’s best snowboarders and his dominance has certainly shown at Cattleman’s where he is the only rider to win three back to back titles.

“I’m just so stoked, I felt like I rode really well and can’t believe this is my fourth title,” Jye said as he clutched another novelty cheque to add to the collection he keeps in his lounge room.

In what the judges called one of the hardest finals to judge in the event’s ten year history, Jye was closely followed by little known Mt Buller seasonary, Geremy Guido from Kamloops, Canada, whose flawlessly smooth style and unique use of the whole stair-set secured him second place and $2000.

Third place went to Jindabyne local and all round character, Sam ‘Red Dog’ Neumann whose technicality, consistency and clinical bag of tricks landed him third place and a $1000 pay cheque to carry with him back to Jindabyne.

For the first time in Cattleman’s history, Burton and Mini offered the ‘Mini Stand Out Award’, a chance for one rider to receive a wild card for the Burton Rail Days event in Tokyo, Japan. With a relentless work ethic and incredible persistence, it was Luke Staveley from Melbourne who earned a return trip to Japan and the chance to prove himself amongst the world’s best in October’s Tokyo Burton Rail Days. Luke’s phenomenal determination and pursuit of tricks never performed at Cattleman’s also landed him Best Trick, a backside 50-50 on the close out rail, gap to frontside lipslide on the centre rail, a trick never thought to have been possible at Cattleman’s. Best Trick earned Luke a selection of Burton Durable Goods camping equipment valued at over $1500.

With some timely snowfall arriving at Mt Buller on Friday night, the Cattleman’s Rail Jam day kicked off with qualifiers on a modified Burton Cattleman’s Replica Stair Set in the Frank MBP Terrain Park. “We were at the mercy of the weather today, but once again it’s great to see so many up and coming youngsters from all over Australia in the field” said Paul Colby, Burton Australian Marketing Manager. “For 10 years now we’ve seen the best Australian rail riders come and go, but the event remains as grassroots as ever, offering the chance for up and comers to prove themselves against Australia’s best riders”.

The day’s qualifying semi final was taken out by Troy Sturrock ($500), followed by Geremy Guido ($300) and Tim Laidlaw ($200).

As in years past, the official after party presented by Corona Extra at the Kooroora Hotel did not disappoint. The Mooch ignited the Back Bar, taking his mash-ups to the next level and ensuring that the Cattleman’s after party remains one of the most talked about events on the Australian snow calendar.

SUMMARY

The Xcel Dry Lock was a real favorite for our Tracks wetsuit test pilots. Elliot pretty much summed up the thoughts of the group: "The Dry Lock was the perfect balance between warmth and flexibility and warm without compromising stretch. The zipper they used was great. They've ticked all the boxes... and I love the simple look."

The magnetic zipper fastener was a hit. Like how the power cord attaches to the side of a MacBook Pro.
Jarrah loved the Dry Lock so much, he chose to take it home once the test had ended. Not a bad endorsement for Xcel considering the guy lives and surfs in Tassie!

Dragon APXS Review

We get alot of questions about the Dragon APXS Goggle, How its fits, Whats it like with foggy conditions, Here a good review we have found from Shayboarder and we think its pretty bang on right! http://www.shayboarder.com/

Intended Purpose: The APXs goggle is designed off of the Dragon APX but in a smaller frame option for those wanting the Infinity Lens Technology (full peripheral vision and easy interchangeability).

Location: I wore the goggles at the Winter Park, Colorado on-snow.

Conditions: Mix of sunny bluebird to overcast flat light on the mountain.

Color: I rode the APXs goggle in the white design. I really like the simplicity of the goggle. The lens color matched well with the pink Dragon logo on the side of the strap and it was really just basic good looks. Small Dragon logos on the bottom of the goggle.

Lens: I rode in the pink ionized lens color for the day (I used one of the brighter lens during the sunshine of the day but switched out to this for most of the day). It was really suitable for the cloudy/flat light conditions that were starting to occur on the mountain and I ended up spending the entire day in them. A tad enough blockage from the sun if you needed it but kept you totally visible on the snow ahead.

Fit: This goggle definitely molded to my face and the entire length of my face. Definitely snug and takes up all the space available so you have better peripheral. I didn’t have any airflow coming in through the nose fit so that was good, it stayed nice and comfortable on my nose.

Helmet Compatibility: The goggle still had the good peripheral and larger frame but was capable of molding well with the helmet. No issues with the straps on the helmet.

Visibility: I really liked that this goggle kept up with the APX for peripheral vision and good vision all around, just with a better smaller fit for myself.

Features: The APXs goggle is part of the Infinity Lens Technology, which eliminates the goggle frame profile for endless peripheral vision and easy lens interchangeability. The goggle is sealed and features a super anti-fog formula so you don’t fog up on the mountain. For comfort, the goggle has polar tech micro fleece. It also features an optically correct lens, uni-directional flow, helmet compatible and 100% UV protection.

Durability: I only played with these goggles at the on-snow at Winter Park. So I didn’t get to really take them out for a long period of time other than during the day of snowboarding. The true durability test would be a whole season in them but I’m unable to do that until next winter.

Thoughts: Last year I was amped on the APX goggle but the fit could have been better. Now the APXs offer the smaller fit for us faces that need a bit tighter face fit for less fogging on the mountain. It’s pretty rad to see them take the APX style into a smaller face fit. The peripheral is on the same lines as the APX but with a bit more padding and face foam to help fit a smaller face frame.

This is definitely the design that suits my face for fit better so I’m definitely going to try to get out a full season on them to try them out for durability and really test the peripheral on multiple days.

Perisher's Epic News and Season Outlook

Perisher front valley and Park looking amazing one winter morning. Nick Gregory (http://www.mountainwatch.com/)

The 2015 winter season is fast approaching and as such its time to talk snow and what is in stall for the season. Firstly a huge announcement coming out of Perisher resort yesterday 31st of March. Vail resorts is in the final stages of a takeover deal with the southern hemispheres largest winter resort.

What does this mean for you?

Lets start off with perisher’s famous freedom season pass, Now add Vail resorts infamous epic pass into the mix, which includes unlimited skiing and boarding at some of north Americas most famous and respected resorts. Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado; Park City and the Canyons in Utah; and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe area. The end result is a pass that offers skiing and snowboarding not only here in Australia but also in the USA for a very reasonable $749. So at the end of our season you have one of the hardest decisions to make where will you be heading to take full advantage of the epic deal.

In other snow related news the chill that you have been feeling the last week or so was the result of a little front making its way up over the south of the continent. With it a drop in temps and a light dusting over the alpine regions. Although this isn’t unusual for this time of year its always exciting and it’s a sign that we all need to get out those winter woollies out. Its also around this time I get the skis and boards out for a pre season tune and wax. if don't have there gear or your unsure how to tune your gear right Bring your board or skis into store for a professional job anytime

Foam Injection

Are you interested in getting a foam injection boot fit? If so, make sure you call to lock in a time to make a boot fitting appointment. We do check quite busy with fitting and locking in a time makes sure you get the attention you deserve. To save you some time here's a few of the most common questions answered by John Morgan who looks after the foam injection.

How long does it take?

We like to do it over 2 sittings however it can be finished in 1 if required. The first appointment is about 45minutes. The second sitting is about 1 hour. If we fit in 1 sitting total time will be about 2hrs 15 min. There is about hour preparation time.

Whats the process?

In the first appointment we measure and analyse the foot and lower leg shape. We then determine the appropriate shell and size that suits your specific needs. At this time we also mould the footbeds for the customer as these are needed for the next stage.

The second appointment is the actual foaming of the boot. We start by placing padding on areas of your feet that require a little less foam in (ankle bones, forefoot, instep, etc) - this creates a little bit of tolerance in these sensitive areas. Similarly we place toe caps over your toes to ensure you have plenty of room around them.

Next is the foaming itself. This is done in 2 stages for each leg. First we do the leg which takes a few minutes as we mix chemicals to create the foam and for it to work its way into the liner. We then do each tongue and foot in a similar fashion. That’s it. Boots come off, let your feet settle for a few minutes, then back on to experience a perfect fit.

Whats included in the price?

First and foremost is the fit and a guarantee from us. Physically you walk away with a the liner, the shell from a brand & model of boot that fiuts your specifics and the footbed.

What will i end up with?

The most precise yet comfortable ski boot you will ever have imagined. You will end up with a boot fit that is as compatible to your foot and lower leg shape as possible. Everything is a mirror image to your individual shape and volume. It will give you the best balance between comfort and support. Comfortable because it is shaped to you. Support because the fit is so precise it locks you in minimising movement.

If you need anything more dont hesitate to contact us or call us at the retail store to talk to you.

Over 30 years and still going strong

A bit of history here but STM's been trading since the mid 80's with the current owners - family run and family owned. We could say we've been around longer as the store was operating technically from the early 80's before it burnt down and the Morgans took over the burnt out shell in 1983.

It began as St Moritz Ski Centre and was located on the Corner of Bronte Rd and Birrell St on the edge of Bondi Junction. It had a mural on the wall that is still discussed today as one of the most recognisable features of the Junction.

The store began selling ski and sailboard gear. 2 passions of the ours and 2 popular trends at the time. We did this for a few years before expanding the store into streetwear and surf. That was until the early 90's when snowboarding came along and started demanding they need some product and weren't happy in the 'uncool' ski gear that was on the mountains.

Seeing the ever growing demand for this sport we split the shop in 2 and set up a snowboard and skate store at 237 Oxford St in the heart of the Junction. This was one of the first true core stores in Sydney and was a favourite amongst the travelling snowboarders and bondi skateboarder.

Before the millenium came around the Bronte Rd building was sold and we had to look for a new premises which was found in Oxford St Mall - our current location. We combined the 2 stores and made a true mega store of what is now snow, skate, surf and fashion plus a snow rental department and snow repair centre.

From there we lanuched online which are now obviously aware of and we've been trading strongly for more than 30 years. Selling the things we're passionate about and getting through every possible snow season imaginable, every up and down of the economy and still managing to step into one of our favourite sports.

So in all this little blog is brief history about us and our origins. We could go on for hours but that would take up to much of your time.
